Employment (FAQs)

1. What are the dates of the Academy?
Academy, including mandatory instructor Orientation, runs from the morning of June 9th through Aug. 20th. You need to be available for the entire length of the summer. There are very few exceptions.

2. Do I have to teach the entire summer?
One of the many great things about working at TAH is that we encourage you to take vacations. They are not paid, unfortunately, but at least you can check out New England and the Islands while you're here. We allow you to plan one vacation (during certain weeks only) and we have the option of designating another vacation week to meet our enrollment needs.

3. Is the Camp open on July 4?
In years when the 4th falls on a week day, it sure is but many people can take the day or week off. First come, first serve.

4. Do you provide meals?
Yes! TAH provides a light breakfasts on Monday and Friday mornings. Lunches are provided daily for the staff. The menu is varied (including sandwiches, vegetarian options, salads, hamburgers, pizza, fruit), catered by local businesses. Dinner is on your own.

5. When do you stop hiring?
We stop hiring when we have filled our staffing needs, usually around May 15.  It never hurts to drop an email after this date however, just in case. We also keep a waiting list in the event of any unplanned emergencies.

6. Do you require interviews?
Yes. We strongly encourage in-person interviews. In some cases, we permit phone interviews accompanied by playing and teaching videos. We occasionally travel throughout the U.S., so contact us for an itinerary.

7. Do I have to be a great tennis player?
To work with the Tennis Tykes (ages 4-6), while you certainly need to be familiar with the game, we're primarily interested in a general sports background and how well you work with kids of that age. For the Junior Program, you need to have played at least HS tennis at a fairly high level--you ought to be very comfortable with basic stroke mechanics. All ATP instructors need to be strong collegiate players or the equivalent. You may be asked to send in a videotape of your playing and/or teaching early in the interview process in order to be considered.

8. Is there an opportunity to work on your own tennis game?
During the camp’s operating hours, instructors are expected to put 100% of their energy and attention towards the kids. After camp closes, the staff can play on the beautiful Harvard courts. Once a week there is often a clinic instructed by one of our very own experienced coaches. Staffers frequently gather for after-camp workouts and conditioning!
